According to research and statistics, 70% to 90% of visits to doctors is stress-related. My work centres on the relief of stress. The holistic approach to dealing with stress recognizes that beneath the problems, beneath the stress, beneath the conditioned personality, lies the real self, which is spiritual in nature, always moving towards perfection, emitting an energy that is healing and life-transforming. Therapy is seen as an education process in which this can be uncovered.
Therapy is educational and solution-focused; actually teaching the client how to produce desired results and involves active participation by the client in putting the skills taught into practice. It is goal-directed rather than problem-led, focusing on the end result: what the client wants to achieve - how they want to be - and reconnecting with the real self.
The therapist's purpose is to create a climate in which this can happen - on both a conscious and unconscious level. It is essential for the therapist to be clear, to be in the present, to really listen with their whole being and carefully elicit the client's goals and aspirations rather than imposing them on the client.
In their professional work, holistic psychotherapists are required to ensure they offer the best service possible and refer clients to other health care professionals where appropriate, working closely with doctors, physiotherapists and others in the health care system – as well as registered professionals in the field of complementary medicine, offering a 'whole' or 'holistic' programme for recovery and well being.
The Liberating Power of Writing
One of the tools I use to deal with stress is journaling. Therapeutic, enlightening and fun – writing is a way to help examine and understand the events and experiences of life and the amazing effects of simply putting your thoughts on paper!
Research shows that writing deep thoughts and feelings about events in our lives helps us to heal, both emotionally and physically. Writing our stories helps release buried emotions, giving rise to insights about how we have lived our lives, how we can make positive changes and even un-lock hidden talent!
Whether you want to write the story of your life to leave to your children, heal emotional wounds, or create a novel, writing will help you to recognise the importance of your physical, emotional and spiritual journey.
